The Amazing Avocado Of The Philippines

It's Avocado Season!


I always avoided avocados before I came to the Philippines. All I knew about avocados was that they were the green stuff I left on my plate at the Mexican restaurant. I always thought guacamole was gross - plus you never know who might have put strychnine in it (inside joke).

But coming to the Philippines changed all of that. Avocados are cheap and plentiful, costing the equivalent of about eighty cents per pound where we live. We have even managed to get a few young avocado trees growing in the back yard.

We eat avocados almost everyday now. Supposedly, the monounsaturated fat (oleic acid) in avocado works to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and raise HDL (good cholesterol). I love to eat them on home made burritos and I even choke them down plain just for the fact that they are good for health.

Most of all, I love avocado shakes. I am in charge of making guacamole (sans strychnine), but my wife is the expert at making avocado shakes.


Ingredients For The Avocado Shake:

  • about 1/4 cup of brown sugar
  • two average size avocados
  • half a blender full of ice
  • enough Alaska Fresh Milk to make it all work
  • cinnamon (not shown)
What you end up with is about three cups of spectacular:

I know it does not look like much, but trust me, it's spectacular. I am in fact an addict. I could drink avocado shakes all day and usually do.
